Autism Awareness is Always. Not just April.

, ,

Last month, I kept seeing events, fundraisers, and activities for individuals and families in the autism community. But they were all in other states and counties.

I noticed this before when trying to find places in the area that had event times specifically for special needs. In the fall, the closest pumpkin patch with times for special needs children was an hour away. Also, in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week.

I know we can go to any pumpkin patch and we shouldn’t have to attend something specific for special needs. We have visited the local pumpkin patch with him in the past and it was fine. But I think other parents with special needs kids would agree, sometimes it is too much. Other kids running and yelling can be overwhelming for these kids. It over stimulates them and they aren’t always able to adjust to their surroundings.

Also, unless it is an awareness month, you don’t hear much about families with special needs.  Sadly, there isn’t a lot of information or resources locally for families of children with special needs. I wasn’t able to find a Facebook group for local families to share information.

So, I decided to create one. I want the group to be a place to share information. It could be local businesses that offer special needs events. Recommendations for doctors, dentists, etc. Ask questions and build a community.
